Arthur Wellin , actually Arthur Lewin (born October 31, 1880 in Berlin , † probably 1941 ) was a German film director and actor.

Life

Lewin, who renamed himself Wellin at a young age in order to conceal his Jewish identity, had already played on Berlin theaters before the First World War - Berlin theater , Schiller Theater , Neues Schauspielhaus - and was employed there in the 1st hero class . He also performed in the provinces, for example as a singer in Trier . As a director in film since 1913, Wellin intensified his work in front of and behind the camera with the outbreak of the First World War.

Wellin directed 17 silent films between 1916 and 1927 and acted occasionally as an actor. He became known as the director of a two-part leather stocking film. A 5-part series with Alexander Moissi , which was created between 1918 and 1920, also attracted attention. Wellin complied with Moissi's request to have worked as a stage director. For a time, Wellin was co-owner of the production company Amboß-Film together with Rudolf Dworsky .

As an actor he was u. a. engaged at the Volksbühne Berlin in the 1925/26 season . Shortly before Adolf Hitler came to power , Wellin received his only sound film role in " Ganovenehre " in 1932. As a Jew, excluded from gaming since 1933, Wellin then joined the Kulturbund Deutscher Juden . His last sign of life dates from 1941. He was transported from Prague to the Lodz ghetto on Transport D , where he arrived on October 31, 1941. It is unclear exactly when and how he perished.
