Jerzy Toeplitz (born November 24, 1909 in Charkow , † July 24, 1995 in Warsaw ) was a Polish film historian and rector of the Łódź Film School .

Life

Toeplitz studied law in Warsaw . In the 1930s he wrote articles on film for numerous Polish daily newspapers and film magazines. In 1930 he was one of the founding members of the Society of Artistic Film Lovers called START . Between 1934 and 1937 he worked in London as a script consultant for the film production company Toeplitz Film Production , a cousin's company. During the German occupation in World War II, he lived in Warsaw and worked as an English teacher.

After the war he was one of the pioneers in the reconstruction of the Polish film industry . Initially in 1945 he was head of the foreign department of the state film production. He was one of the founders of the Łódź Film School and initially worked there from 1949 to 1951 as a lecturer. In 1957 he was appointed rector of the Łódź Film School and stayed that way until 1968. After the student riots in March 1968 , he was dismissed for having supported the students in their protests. In 1972 he left Poland at the invitation of the Australian government, but also because he was exposed to pressure from the Polish authorities due to his Jewish origins. He first taught as a lecturer at Melbourne University and then founded the first Australian film and television college in Sydney in 1973, and was its director until 1979. The college library was later named after him. Toeplitz was a member of the Christian Peace Conference (CFK).

Until the end of his life he gave film studies seminars at the University of Warsaw . He also had a standing column in the Polish specialist magazine Film .

His most important journalistic work is the six-volume story of the film . In addition to his teaching and authoring activities, he also held various positions internationally. From 1948 to 1972 he was President of the International Federation of Film Archives . From 1966 to 1972 he was vice chairman of the UNESCO International Council for Film and Television .
