Guillermo David Kuitca (born January 22, 1961 in Buenos Aires ) is an Argentine artist. He lives and works in Buenos Aires .

Life

Guillermo Kuitca is the son of a psychoanalyst. His grandparents were Jewish emigrants who came to Argentina from Russia at the beginning of the 20th century. These family origins would later influence Kuitca's work. His artistic training began at an early age. From 1970 to 1979 he learned painting with Ahuva Szlimowicz in Buenos Aires. At the same time he was engaged in film and theater at secondary school. From 1975 to 1977 he was also a student of the Argentine painter Victor Chab (* 1930). At the age of 13, Kuitca had his first solo exhibition at Galeria Lirolay in Buenos Aires and then exhibited regularly. His early work was influenced by Francis Bacon , among others . During a trip through Europe in 1980, Kuitca met the choreographer Pina Bausch and her dance theater in Wuppertal. The following year he returned to his hometown and staged several theater productions.

In the early 1980s, Kuitca began painting figurines, drawing inspiration from his own or other theater plays, film, literature and popular music. His picture series Nadie olvida nada and El mar dulce, for example, are based on theatrical performances staged by him and Carlos Ianni. With El mar dulce he took up the later recurring theme (e.g. Odessa ) immigration; the work title refers to the Río de la Plata , where his grandparents arrived in Argentina. Kuitca often depicted large-format, cave-like stage sets in which there are small furnishings and equally small figures - sometimes violently - act. For this he mainly used oil or acrylic paints on canvas, which he used in a blurred, muted tone or in one color. Later on, Kuitca's works became more abstract and people no longer appeared in them. In 1987 he began to paint pictures based on city maps or apartment floor plans. He created most of these works on canvas, but also some on mattresses that he hung on the wall or placed on beds.

Kuitca is one of the most famous contemporary artists in Latin America and had a significant influence on the renewal of painting at the end of the 20th century. Works by him can be found in the collections of the Daros Latinamerica Collection , London's Tate Gallery and the Milwaukee Art Museum . Solo exhibitions of his work have taken place at renowned exhibition venues such as the Museum of Modern Art (1991), Institut Valencià d'Art Modern (1993) and Fondation Cartier (2000). For Argentina he took part in the 9th Documenta and the 52nd Venice Biennale .

In addition to painting, Kuitca also works as a set designer in Buenos Aires. He designed the sets for La casa de Bernarda Alba by Federico García Lorca at the Teatro San Martín (2002) and The Flying Dutchman by Richard Wagner at the Teatro Colón (2003).

Kuitca is also committed to teaching and promoting young artists. Since 1991, scholarship programs (“Beca Kuitca”) have been carried out under his leadership, sponsored by various organizations such as Fundación Antorchas and Fundación PROA. From 2003 he led an 18-month workshop for fine arts at the Centro Cultural Ricardo Rojas. In 2004 he was awarded a diploma from the Universidad de Buenos Aires for his services , which accredited him as an honorary professor. In 1999 and 2004 he taught as a visiting professor at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in Skowhegan , where he is also a member of the school board. In October 2006, he participated in the Master's Artist-in-Residence program at the Atlantic Center for the Arts in New Smyrna Beach .
