Sperone Westwater is an American gallery for contemporary art in New York .

history

The gallery was founded in 1975 by Angela Westwater, Gian Enzo Sperone and Konrad Fischer as Sperone Westwater Fischer in New York. Gian Enzo Sperone's Sperone Gallery in Turin had existed since 1963 , while Konrad Fischer opened a gallery in Düsseldorf in 1967 . Westwater was previously editor-in-chief of the art magazine Artforum "[...] and feed up with words." The gallery of the three art dealers was located at 142 Green Street in SoHo . In 1982 Fischer resigned, the name of the gallery was changed to today's Sperone Westwater and additional exhibition space was added at 121 Greene Street. In 2002 she moved to more spacious rooms in the Meatpacking District .

Norman Foster Gallery House

In September 2010 the gallery opened its new house on the Lower East Side . This made Sperone Westwater one of the first major art dealers to move to the Bowery . The new house with a street frontage only 7.5 meters wide and 30 meters deep was planned by the British office Foster + Partners . The eight-storey building with an area of 1,800 m² was given a glass facade, which is framed by black-lacquered metal frames. Behind the transparent glass facade there is an oversized red elevator that is used as a freight elevator, but can also be used as a “moving room” for exhibition purposes. Temporary exhibitions take place on the lower three floors, the other floors are intended for the library, office rooms and private showrooms. The first exhibition was for Guillermo Kuitac, with the installation Le Sacre from 1992.

Represented artists

In addition to the artists of the European galleries of Sperone and Fischer, such as Carl Andre , Sandro Chia , Francesco Clemente , Enzo Cucchi and Mario Merz , the gallery also represented Gerhard Richter in the USA in the 1970s and 1980s . Today Richard Long , Bruce Nauman , Julian Schnabel and Not Vital are among the gallery's regular artists.
