Sandro Chia (born April 20, 1946 in Florence ) is a contemporary Italian - American artist . Alongside Enzo Cucchi and Mimmo Paladino, he is one of the main representatives of the postmodern Italian transavant-garde (Italian: Transavanguardia ), which first came to light in the mid- 1970s .

As a child he decided to become a painter and later studied at the Istituto d 'Arte in Florence and at the Accademia di Belle Arti . He made numerous trips to India , Turkey and all over Europe .

Chia settled in Rome in 1970 and developed his own style of conceptual art . In 1980 he received a scholarship from the city of Mönchengladbach . Then Chia went to New York . Like his artist colleague Francesco Clemente , he constantly commuted between the USA and his home country Italy. He had his first exhibition at the Sperone Westwater Gallery with recognition from other renowned artists such as B. Andy Warhol .

Sandro Chia owns his own winery, the Castello Romitorio in Montalcino. He designs the labels for his wines himself.

In his imagery, Sandro Chia draws from an eclectic fund and likes to quote earlier art epochs and currents in his work, such as Italian Mannerism , Cubism , Futurism or Fauvism .

Chia prefers punch-line and expressive colors that other artists of the Italian transavant-garde and Arte Cifra counterpoint in their archaic, often monochrome, earthy subjects. He prefers to choose cyclops , centaurs or saints as a motif and also likes to satirize religious writings.
