Hans Rost (born June 25, 1877 in Bamberg , † April 18, 1970 in Westheim (City of Neusäß )) was a German journalist and suicide researcher .

The studied German and political scientist devoted himself as a local editor in Augsburg, but also many social topics with personal responsibility. Publicly, he campaigned against housing shortages and student mensuras as well as for illegitimate mothers, large families and charitable initiatives. As a contentious Catholic , he published the text "Christ - not Hitler" in 1932, which in 1933 brought him a few weeks' protective custody. From 1933 to 1940 (years 1–7, no more published) Hans Rost was the editor of Sankt Wiborada. A yearbook for book lovers .

From around 1910 , Rost collected all kinds of texts about suicide , from philosophical and religious writings to newspaper articles and statistical reports. In addition to four books of his own on the subject, he published a "Bibliography of Suicide" in 1927 with around 5000 of the titles he has identified. It lists literature on the technique of suicide, on double, family and mass suicide, on the “punishment” of suicides, on the so-called Werther effect and on suicide in soldiers and animals. The bibliography names 100 works on the subject of “ euthanasia ” alone . Rost also personally collected numerous books and essays. His estate is the so-called “suicide” or “suicide library”, which is now part of the Augsburg State and City Library . His bibliographical and journalistic activities make Rost a pioneer in suicide . The German Society for Suicide Prevention (DGS) has named its research award after him.

Rost had been a member of the Catholic student association KDStV Markomannia Würzburg since 1897 .
