Museo de Arte Latinoamericano de Buenos Aires
The Museo de Arte Latinoamericano de Buenos Aires (MALBA) is an art museum in Buenos Aires that opened in 2001 . It is located on Avenida Figueroa Alcorta in the Palermo district .
history
In 1996 the businessman and collector of Latin American contemporary art Eduardo F. Costantini decided to preserve and exhibit his valuable collection. For this purpose, he set up a foundation that planned to build a museum. He envisioned the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York founded by the Rockefellers as a model . The following year, at the end of an international competition organized by the Union Internationale des Architectes (UIA) in Paris and staged as part of the VII International Architecture Biennial in Buenos Aires (“BA / 97”), that of three young architects model submitted from Cordoba awarded. Renowned architects such as Norman Foster , César Pelli and Mario Botta were among the jurors . The hitherto practically unknown Gastón Atelman, Martín Fourcade and Alfredo Tapia appeared as the architecture firm “AFT Arquitectos”. After four years of construction, the museum opened with the name Museo de Arte Latinoamericano de Buenos Aires in September 2001.
The exhibition rooms are arranged around a high, strongly illuminated central hall and connected to one another. The upper floors of the building can be reached via escalators or a glass elevator . A spacious auditorium on the lower floor offers space for 250 people. The group of architects traveled to Europe and the USA to comparable museums to assess and select the equipment, which should be state-of-the-art and the highest technical level. Costantini's donation of more than 200 works from all over Latin America, including those by Frida Kahlo , Diego Rivera , Antonio Berni , Roberto Matta , Wifredo Lam , Guillermo Kuitca and other key works of avant-garde art on the continent , formed the basis of the art objects . As early as 2006, founder Costantini saw the MALBA reach its limits with around three and a half million visitors annually. He applied for an extension, which was approved in 2011 after the usual formal hearings and approvals as well as the choice of architects.
In May 2007 the MALBA was declared a cultural monument by the legislative body of the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires . In 2008 it was awarded the Konex Foundation's Konex Platinum Prize for Fine Arts as the best cultural institution. Even before the expansion work began, the museum was awarded the so-called “Decade Prize” at the 2012 International Architecture Biennale, an award given to buildings that have lost none of their modernity and attractiveness even after ten years of use. The extension project was placed in the hands of the Uruguayan architect Carlos Ott . He had previously built the Paris Opéra Bastille and the two Argentine airports Aeropuerto Internacional de Ushuaia Malvinas Argentinas and Aeropuerto Internacional de El Calafate - Comandante Armando Tola . After his experience and success with the MALBA in Buenos Aires, he also built the first museum for Latin American art in Uruguay. The extension was made underground so that the space in front of the museum was retained as a green area. Around 500 square meters of the almost 4,000 square meters of newly created museum space were roofed over with glass, so that exhibits can also be seen from the public square above.
The MALBA lives up to its task of presenting Latin American art from the early 20th century to the present through acquisitions. In addition to the procurement of, for example, older photographs by Horacio Coppola , those responsible attach particular importance to exhibits documenting current developments, such as those offered by video art , installation art and textile art . Collectors such as Claudia Caraballo de Quentin, Juan Cambiaso and Ricardo Grüneisen support the museum's interests. The number of objects belonging to the MALBA from all areas of the visual arts is over 600 and includes works by (to name further examples) Tarsila do Amaral , Pedro Figari , Xul Solar , Emilio Pettoruti , Joaquín Torres García , Emiliano Di Cavalcanti , David Alfaro Siqueiros and Candido Portinari . These form the permanent exhibitions , but temporary exhibitions are also presented. A large scale was shown 2018/19 Pablo Suárez - retrospective with 100 paintings, drawings and objects.
Own publications complement the museum's visualization of artistic tendencies, ensure broader knowledge of them among the population and carry out research. Be offered in addition workshops , such as design workshops. In the various auditoriums that have existed since the expansion, film cycles are shown and seminars , courses , book presentations, lecture evenings etc. are held. The extensive educational program is aimed at different target groups . As an active center of artistic and cultural dissemination in Buenos Aires, the MALBA has become indispensable.
