Pedro Figari , full name Pedro Figari Solari , (born June 29, 1861 in Montevideo ; † July 24, 1938 ibid) is a painter and politician from Uruguay , whose pictures mainly depicted everyday scenes from Montevideo and the country.

Life

Born in 1861 to Juan Figari de Lazar and Paula Solari, he became assistant to the finance minister in 1885 and completed his law degree in 1886 as a criminal and civil defense lawyer. In the same year he married Maria de Castro Caravia. The wedding is followed by a long stay in Europe in France , England , Germany , Austria , Belgium , Italy , Holland and Denmark . Figari also begins studying art with the Italian artist Godofredo Sommavilla in Montevideo. In 1893 he began his career as a journalist for the El Deber newspaper . In 1896 Figari became a member of Parliament in Rocha . Two years later he is Secretary of State at the Partido Colorado after joining Parliament. In 1899 he becomes a Member of Parliament in Minas and becomes Vice President of the House of Representatives.

In 1905 he became an honorary member of the Conciliation Internationale and was an attorney for the Banco de la Republica (until 1915). Four years later he was appointed to the board of directors of the Asistencia Publica National School of Art , and in 1911 Figari became President of the River Navigation Company and Director of the State Transport and Railway Company. In 1914 he became an honorary member of the Uruguayan artists' association and a member of the Comité France-Amerique . From 1915 he was director of the arts and crafts school and as such was responsible for the reformation of the same according to his own plans from 1917. In 1920 he was offered the post of ambassador of Uruguay in Peru , which he refused.

In 1921 he moved to Buenos Aires , where he devoted himself exclusively to art. In 1924 Figari was a founding member of the Friends of Art Association in Buenos Aires. A year later he moves to Paris , where he devotes himself to the planning of art exhibitions in Europe and America for nine years. In 1927 his son and colleague, the architect Juan Carlos Figari Castro, dies . In 1928 he was appointed minister for foreign affairs in London with full powers , and was also made a knight of the British Empire .

In 1933 he was appointed advisor to the Minister of Education and the Arts in Uruguay. As such, he is responsible for the free art exchange between Uruguay and Argentina . He also returns to Uruguay that same year. In 1934 he was made a permanent member of the Cultural Union in Seville. In 1938 the last exhibition of his works took place in Buenos Aires at the Friends of Art Association . He dies on July 24th three days after returning to Montevideo.
