The Valencian Institute of Modern Art (IVAM) is the most important museum of modern art in the city of Valencia . It shows the development of art and photography in the 20th century. The museum offers both permanent collections and temporary exhibitions, discussions and courses. It is run by the Ministry of Culture, Education and Sport of the Valencia Region.

Building the museum

The museum is divided into two large units, the Center Julio González , which opened in 1989, and the Sala de la Muralla, which has been open to visitors since 1991:

  • In the Center Julio González there are numerous works by the influential artist on display, which are also representative of the art of the 20th century. Graphics , photo art and photo montages are in the foreground. Seven picture galleries guide artistically through the 20th century . Another focus is the collection of works by the painter Ignacio Pinazo , of whom the museum has over 100 paintings and more than 600 drawings.
  • In the Sala de la Muralla, apart from the impressive remains of the old city wall, there are other, constantly changing exhibitions of painting and photography from the avant-garde to the 1970s. A focus is also placed on the very latest art.

There are often open-air exhibitions in front of the IVAM. In total, the museum shows around 2,000 works.
