Lari Pittman's artistic training fell in the 1970s, when conceptual art took a pioneering role. Whereas his early works therefore consciously attempt to disrupt an idea of “pure painting” through collage and assemblage , these techniques disappeared in the mid-1980s - but the collage-like aspect remains.

Pittman's pictures have several layers and levels of meaning, they contain their own network of symbols . Every painting is such a complex construction of signs , a space in itself. The works are multi-layered and complex. In their narrative design they create their own systems and orders. Pittman brings lines, abstract forms and stylized representational objects together in multi-layered, palimpsest-like painting structures. The result is almost like an archaeological site in which the observer has the task of bringing to light what has been hidden over the centuries, layer by layer.

The artist's Latin American roots also play a role in the creation of the image. Pittman allows folkloric elements from flora and fauna , mythological figures, fetish objects and everyday objects from Latin America to flow into his compositions .
