biography

Catherine Opie studied at the San Francisco Art Institute , where she received her BFA (Bachelor of Fine Arts) degree in 1985. At the California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) in Valencia , she received her Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in 1988. From 2000 to 2001 she was Professor of Fine Art at Yale University in New Haven , Connecticut . Since 2001 she has been Professor of Photography at the University of Los Angeles ( UCLA ).

Opie's work consists of a number of self-portraits, for which she partially pierced and scratched her body with needles, or shows herself in special positions or roles. Some portraits show other artists, like Ron Athey, and show their body manipulations, e.g. B. tattoos and piercings. Other photographs show couples from the LGBT scene. The photographs combine elements of contemporary art with traditional portrait photography and show the complexity of modern identities. Many of the photographs are almost life-size; Opie uses specially made Polaroid cameras , some of which are the size of a room .

In her more recent works, which were presented at the Whitney Biennale in 2004 , she deals with architecture and urban spaces, but also with landscapes in ice and on water.

The lesbian artist lives in Los Angeles with her partner, painter Julie Burleigh, and her son Oliver .
