Hatje Cantz is an international specialist publisher for art , architecture , photography and design . Hatje Cantz has been producing and publishing individual publications since 1945. Currently around 200 new titles appear in the publishing program every year. As part of Edition Hatje Cantz , Hatje Cantz is launching works on paper, photographic works and art objects by renowned artists in limited, signed editions. Hatje Cantz has been part of the Ganske publishing group since 2011 .

Publishing history

In 1945, Gerd Hatje founded Humanitas Verlag , which published novels , novels and pieces from world literature . The then 30-year-old typesetter Hatje received his publishing license from the French-American military government. From 1947 this operated as "Verlag Gerd Hatje". In the fifties Gerd Hatje focused on the fine arts, modern architecture and international design for his publishing program. Gerd Hatje maintained contacts with numerous artists such as Le Corbusier , Alberto Giacometti and Henri Matisse . At the same time, the Dr. Cantz'sche Druckerei , founded by Hugo Cantz in 1933 and continued by his son Walter after the war, became one of the leading printing addresses for art books. In accordance with the wishes of the artists, theirs at the Dr. Cantz'schen Druckerei found books that were also produced in bookshops, ultimately prompting the printing company to found edition cantz . Thanks to the booming art and catalog book market in the 1980s, a new field of activity opened up.

As a continuation of his interest in making modern art , architecture and photography tangible beyond the medium of the book , Gerd Hatje first offered his art-interested readership a small etching by the Spanish artist Eduardo Chillida in the 1960s . As a driving force in the industry, he paved the way for what was then a new program area. Since then, Hatje Cantz Verlag has regularly published works on paper, photographic works and art objects in limited, signed editions. 

In 1990, at the age of 75, Gerd Hatje sold his publishing house to Dr. Cantz'sche print shop. In 1993 they were taken over by the J. Fink printing company . The art historian Annette Kulenkampff took over the program planning in 1995 and later the management. Initially, the Gerd Hatje publishing house and edition cantz will continue to operate independently of one another. In October 1995, Kulenkampff took over the program planning for both houses. In 2011, Heinz Wurzel took over Dr. Cantz'sche Druckerei and Edition Cantz. The traditional printing company operates under the umbrella of the Wurzel Mediengruppe as Dr. Cantz'sche Druckerei Medien .

As a publisher, Kulenkampff intensified her collaboration with international museums and expanded the Collector's Editions . In 2006 Hatje Cantz opened a branch in Berlin under the direction of art and architecture historian Cristina Steingräber . Gerd Hatje died on July 24, 2007.

After J. Fink Holding went bankrupt in 2011, Hatje Cantz became part of the Hamburger Ganske publishing group. In July 2013, Cristina Steingräber succeeded Annette Kulenkampff as managing director and publisher. In 2015 Hatje Cantz Verlag celebrated Gerd Hatje's centenary and at the same time the 70th anniversary of the publisher. In 2016, art historian and journalist Holger Liebs came to Hatje Cantz as program director. Liebs was editor-in-chief of the art magazine Monopol and previously worked in the features section of the Süddeutsche Zeitung . In June, Cristina Steingräber left the publishing house after eleven years. She was followed by Holger Liebs, who from July 2017 headed Hatje Cantz Verlag together with managing director Thomas PJ Feinen until 2018. Nicola von Velsen and Sven Fund have been running the publishing house since November 2018.
