Annette Kulenkampff

Annette Kulenkampff (* 1957 in Hanover ) is a German art historian . She is the managing director of the German Institute for Urban Architecture in Frankfurt am Main . From 2014 to 2018 she was managing director of the documenta in Kassel.

Life

After graduating from high school , Kulenkampff worked as a stewardess and studied art history, German and archeology at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main . In 1986 she completed her studies with a Magister Artium . From 1981 to 1989 she was a partner in the Gering-Kulenkampff Gallery for Realistic Art in Frankfurt am Main.

From 1989 to 1995, Annette Kulenkampff headed the publications department of the Art and Exhibition Hall of the Federal Republic of Germany in Bonn , which she had previously set up. In 1995 she became assistant to the management of the two art publishers Gerd Hatje and Cantz in Ostfildern , which belonged to the J.Fink media group . In 1997 she became managing director of the publishing association, which merged in 1999 in the legal form of a GmbH & Co. KG to become Hatje Cantz Verlag . Kulenkampff was responsible for around 200 new publications annually. The catalogs for the documenta exhibitions documenta 9 , documenta 10 , documenta 11 and documenta 13 have also been published by this publisher since 1992 . At the same time, she was the editor of the former Belser Kunstquartal, a quarterly calendar with exhibition dates (since 2015 as KQ Kunstquartal in Zeit Kunstverlag ). Until 2013, Kulenkampff was chairwoman of the Württembergischer Kunstverein in Stuttgart, as well as a board member of the Friends of the Staatsgalerie Stuttgart and the Literaturhaus Stuttgart.

The documenta supervisory board appointed Kulenkampff in April 2013 as the successor to the retired Bernd Leifeld as managing director of the documenta and Museum Fridericianum-gGmbH . She took up her position on April 1, 2014 and was among other things responsible for the management of documenta 14 , which will take place in 2017 . The exhibition ended on September 17, 2017 with a million deficit.

For the first time in its history, documenta 14 took place at two equal locations. After 100 days in Athens and Kassel , it ended on September 17, 2017 with a record of over 1.2 million visitors and a deficit of one million. Annette Kulenkampff was the managing director of the documenta und Museum Fridericianum gGmbH until June 1, 2018 . The contract was prematurely terminated by her. Since July 1, 2018, she has been the managing director of the German Institute for Urban Architecture in Frankfurt am Main.
