Fashion Island , which is surrounded by Newport Center Drive, forms the focal point of the Newport Center . The huge shopping center houses numerous shops and department stores. There is an abundance of restaurants and other entertainment options in the immediate vicinity.
history
A jamboree of the Boy Scouts of America took place on the grounds of today's Newport Center in 1953 . 50,000 scouts from all 48 US states as well as Alaska , Hawaii and 16 other countries took part. A nearby street was later christened Jamboree Road in memory of this event .
In the early 1960s, the local Irvine Company began planning the construction of the Newport Center. A business district with offices, shops and restaurants was to be created. The location chosen was an area on the so-called Irvine Ranch , one of the company's large land holdings. During the excavation work, the remains of a petrified forest were found .
The first structures were built in the international style . The well-known architects William Pereira and Welton Becket were responsible for the building design. In 1967 the Fashion Island , a large shopping center, finally opened its doors. Pacific Life's headquarters on Newport Center Drive, built in 1972, is considered an outstanding example of futurism in architecture.
In the following years, the Newport Center has developed into a lively shopping and business center in Newport Beach, which exudes a great attraction far beyond the borders of Orange County .
