Location and directions

Entrance to the Fashion Island

The Fashion Island is located in Corona del Mar , a district of Newport Beach . The mall is at the center of a business and entertainment district called the Newport Center . The sprawling complex is on a hill overlooking Newport Bay with the harbor and the Pacific Ocean . In the immediate vicinity is the Orange County Museum of Art (OCMA), one of the city's cultural figureheads.

Newport Center Drive surrounds Fashion Island in a circle. Parking spaces are available around the building. The palm-lined main entrance is on California State Route 1 (Pacific Coast Highway), which runs along the southern boundary of the property. Two tall pillars point to the entrance to the Newport Center and Fashion Island.

The Orange County Transportation Authority (OCTA) operates five bus routes that stop at Fashion Island. All stops are located around the mall on Newport Center Drive.

history

Fashion Island was built in 1967 as part of the new Newport Center . At the time it consisted of just four retail stores. The architects of the original building were William Pereira and Welton Beckett. The latter had already helped design the nearby South Coast Plaza , another shopping mall. The buildings were in the style of Spanish colonial architecture. A bronze greyhound by the artist Tom Van Sant can be admired at the southwest entrance .

View over the area

When Fashion Island was inaugurated in 1967, it was included in the Guinness Book of Records as the largest of its kind . Shortly after the opening, the luxury department store chain Neiman Marcus moved in . After a minor renovation in the 1980s, the so-called Atrium Court was created . The first major expansion of the area finally followed in 1988 under the direction of the architect Jon Jerde. It included the construction of three new shopping streets, the Terrace Food Court and a cinema . A fountain was also installed in the inner courtyard, the fountain of which can shoot up to nine meters in height.

In the 1990s there was a lot of coming and going: shops closed and new shops made way. Well-known department store chains such as Macy’s settled here. One of the first Bloomingdale’s branches on the west coast of the USA opened its doors in 1996. After 2000, renovation work was carried out again on Fashion Island. A branch of Nordstrom is planned to move in in 2010 .

Christmas tree

Every year at the beginning of November a huge Christmas tree is set up in front of Fashion Island . The fir is always around 35 meters high and is illuminated by more than 17,000 lights. The tree is felled in a wooded area near Mount Shasta . Due to its length, it has to be disassembled into several parts and transported to its destination, where it is then put back together again.

In art and media

The mall has established itself as a fixture in Southern California over time . The Fashion Island has therefore already appeared in a number of well-known film and television productions, including:

  • OC, California (2003–07), the Newport Beach television series often integrates city attractions or buildings into the plot. There is also a mall sometimes featured in the fictional series. Aerial photos of the Fashion Island are displayed. However, the shooting took place in nearby Manhattan Beach .
  • Newport Harbor: The Real Orange County (2007-08), the MTV reality series, tracks the lives of local youthattendinglocal Newport Harbor High School . Fashion Island is mentioned several times by the people portrayed.
