Pacific Life is an American life insurance - and financial services company headquartered in Newport Beach in the US state of California .

The company was founded in 1868 and is listed on Forbes Magazine's Fortune 500 list . Sales in 2007 amounted to about 6.5 billion US dollars .

Pacific Life was also the eponymous sponsor of the Indian Wells Masters tennis tournament until 2008 .

Headquarters in Newport Beach

The company was founded in Sacramento in 1868 under the name Pacific Mutual . Former Governor Leland Stanford was the first chairman of the company, which moved to San Francisco in 1881. The first accident insurance was offered four years later . After the devastating San Francisco earthquake of 1906 , Pacific Mutual relocated its headquarters to Los Angeles further south .

In the early 1970s, the subsidiary PIMCO was founded , which today operates as an independent capital investment company. In 1972, the company was relocated to the new Newport Center business district in Newport Beach . From 1988 Pacific Mutual introduced a unit-linked life insurance with flexible premium payment methods.

In 1997 the company was finally converted into a Mutual Holding Company and adopted its current name Pacific Life . Since 2005, the insurer has been officially based in the state of Nebraska for tax reasons . However, the headquarters of the administration remains in Newport Beach, California .
