Jean-Frédéric Schnyder

Jean-Frédéric Schnyder (born May 16, 1945 in Basel ) is a Swiss painter , graphic artist , photographer , object and installation artist and conceptual artist . He has lived in Zug since 1996 .

life and work

Jean-Frédéric Schnyder grew up in the orphanage in Bern . From 1962 to 1965 he completed an apprenticeship as a photographer in Wengen .

From 1966 he created his first artistic works, which were to be located as object art in the vicinity of Pop Art . That year, Harald Szeemann invites him to participate in the exhibition When Attitudes Become Form in the Kunsthalle Bern . From 1970, Schnyder dealt with oil painting and conceptual art. In 1972 he took part in Documenta 5 in Kassel in the Individual Mythologies department with some objects . He was also represented as an artist at Documenta 7 in 1982.

Jean-Frédéric Schnyder had important solo exhibitions in 1987 in the Kunsthalle Basel , in 1992 in the Kunstmuseum Bern and in the Aargauer Kunsthaus Aarau . In 1993 Schnyder represented Switzerland at the Venice Biennale .

As an artist, Jean-Frédéric Schnyder is self-taught . His work, his media and topics are diverse. As a painter he worked in the areas between realism , symbolism and abstract color field painting . He also created sculptures made of clay, metal and wood and objects made of various materials such as Lego blocks or chewing gum. Schnyder's art often walks a tightrope between humor, kitsch and a parody of the conventional art world.
