Stephen Soroka

Stephen Soroka ( Ukrainian : Стефан Сорока, born November 13, 1951 in Winnipeg , Canada ) is a Canadian clergyman and emeritus Ukrainian Greek Catholic Archbishop and Metropolitan of Philadelphia .

Life

Stephen Soroka was born on November 13, 1951 to a Ukrainian immigrant family in Winnipeg. After graduating from high school, he studied at the University of Manitoba and the Catholic University of America in Washington, DC He graduated with a Master of Theology . His priest training took place at the Ukrainian Greek Catholic seminary of St. Josaphat in Washington DC On June 13, 1982 Archbishop Maxim Hermaniuk of Winnipeg ordained him as a priest of the Archeparchy of Winnipeg. In 1985 he obtained a doctorate in sociology .

Auxiliary Bishop in Winnipeg

From 1984 to 1993 he served as a judge at the Archbishop's Court of Winnipeg. In 1994 he took over the management of the archiepiscopal chancellery and from 1996 to 1998 was head of the finance and economic department at the archiepiscopal ordinariate of Winnipeg. At the same time he was appointed titular bishop of Acarassus , he was called to the office of auxiliary bishop in Winnipeg on March 29, 1996 . The Archbishop of Winnipeg, Michael Bzdel CSsR , donated him episcopal ordination on June 13, 1996 . Co- consecrators were Bishops Cornelius John Pasichny OSBM of Saskatoon and Volodymyr Walter Paska , Auxiliary Bishop in Philadelphia.

Metropolitan and Archbishop
