Maxim Hermaniuk CSsR OC ( Ukrainian Максим Германюк Maksym Hermanjuk ; born October 30, 1911 in Nowe Selo , Galicia , Austria-Hungary ; † May 3, 1996 in Winnipeg , Canada ) was the first metropolitan of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church in Canada and archbishop from Winnipeg .

Life

Maxim Hermaniuk was the son of Nikita Maxim Hermaniuk and his wife Anna, a née Monchuk. He attended elementary school in his home town of Nowe Selo in what is now the Ukrainian Oblast of Lviv and, after graduating from high school , entered the Redemptorist Order in 1932 . Until 1934 he studied philosophy at the seminary of the Redemptorists , after which a four-year course at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven in Belgium followed. In 1938 he returned to his home and was on 4 September of the same year by Bishop Nicholas Charnetsky CSsR for religious priests of the Redemptorist consecrated . In 1939 he continued his studies at the Catholic University in Leuven. At the same time he completed a degree in oriental languages ​​and history at the University's Oriental Institute. Pastor in Belgium

After 1945, Father Maxim looked after Ukrainian migrants in Belgium and cultivated the Byzantine rite of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church with them . He was soon a co-founder and organizer of the “Ukrainian Aid Committee in Belgium” and looked after Ukrainian emigrants to Canada. Between 1945 and 1948 he founded a magazine for Ukrainian emigrants, a publishing house for religious literature and was chairman of the “Ukrainian Press Information” in Belgium. He organized scholarships for Ukrainian young people and supported their studies at the Catholic University of Leuven. After building a youth home for Ukrainian students, he became a student pastor and took part in international student congresses in Switzerland , Germany and Spain .

Metropolitan in Canada

In 1948, Father Hermaniuk followed the call to Canada and became Provincial of the Province of Ontario . He has taught moral theology and theology at the Waterford, Ontario seminary . In October 1950 he took a pastor's position in Toronto .

On January 13, 1951 he was named titular bishop of Sinna and appointed auxiliary bishop in the Apostolic Exarchate of Manitoba and on June 29, 1951 in the cathedral “St. Vladimir and Olga "by Archbishop Basile Vladimir Ladyka OSBM, the Apostolic Exarch of Canada , for consecrated bishop . On March 13, 1955, he was named Coadjutor Bishop of Manitoba. On April 5, 1956, he took over the office of Apostolic Administrator in the newly established Archeparchy of Winnipeg and on November 3, 1956, was appointed Metropolitan and Archbishop of Winnipeg.

He was the council father in the four sessions of the Second Vatican Council . From 1969 to 1974 he was President of the Synod of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church. In 1992 he went into age-related retirement.
