Roman Danylak (born December 29, 1930 in Toronto - † October 7, 2012 ) was a bishop of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church .

Life

Roman Danylak was ordained a priest on October 13, 1957 . He studied at the Pontifical Urban University and obtained a licentiate in theology . He received his doctorate from the Pontifical Lateran University for doctorate in church and civil law . From 1973 to 1990 he was a member of the Pontifical Commission for the Renewal of Canon Law for the Eastern Churches . In 1992 he was the church rector at St. Josaphat Cathedral in Edmonton and was appointed titular bishop of Nyssa by Pope John Paul II on December 16, 1992 , at the same time he was appointed Apostolic Administrator of Toronto . The Archbishop Maxim Hermaniuk CSsR of Winnipeg and the co-consecrators Archbishop Stephen Sulyk ( Philadelphia ) and Bishop Basil Filevich ( Saskatoon ) initiated him on 25 March 1993 to the bishop.

Conflicts

The authority of the Apostolic Administrator sede plena led to some irritation between the Holy See and the 81-year-old Bishop Isidore Borecky, who was still in office . Borecky did not want to submit his resignation when he reached the age of 75 and rejected the relevant resolutions of the Second Vatican Council . Borecky insisted on a coadjutor instead of an apostolic administrator with further rights. In the conflict, however, differences in the content of the understanding of ministry and the tolerance of married priests also played an important role. The mediation of Archbishop Lubomyr Husars from Lemberg led to an amicable settlement. On July 24, 1998, Cornelius John Pasichny took over the office of bishop in Toronto. Bishop Danylak was called to be canon at the papal basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore .

Against sex education and AIDS awareness

In Canada, Bishop Danylak attracted attention in March 1998 when he turned down a school sex and AIDS education program in Ontario . His declaration was not coordinated with the "Canadian Bishops' Conference of Catholic Bishops", which called for the establishment of an episcopal commission. The topic led to heated discussions both within the church and in public.

Host miracle

Bishop Danylak claims to have witnessed a host miracle in Naju, Korea on September 22, 1995 . The testimony of Bishop Roman Danylak read:

“The Lord loves the world so much that we don't get lost, but to give us eternal life, HE himself became a burnt offering. For the first time in human history, people saw the Sacred Heart of our Lord Jesus Christ with our eyes. "
