Consecration of secret bishops

On April 2, 1977, Cardinal Jossyf Slipyj von Lemberg consecrated the priests Ivan Choma , Stepan Czmil SDB and Lubomyr Husar MSU as so-called "secret bishops". According to unconfirmed sources, Bishop Borecky is said to have assisted as co-consecrator at these episcopal ordinations. The ordinations were made at Castel Gandolfo and only confirmed by the Holy See on February 22, 1996 .

Dispute between Toronto and the Vatican

As a result of the Second Vatican Council, bishops who had reached the age of 75 should offer their resignation to the Pope. Bishop Borecky did not accept this decision and continued his episcopate well beyond this age limit. At the top of this dispute, Pope John Paul II installed Roman Danylak as Apostolic Administrator of the Toronto Eparchy in 1992 . Bishop Borecky also turned against this measure, he criticized the " Apostolic Administrator sede plena " and called for the appointment of a coadjutor . The dispute wasn't settled until 1998. The mediation by Lubomyr Husar from Lemberg led to an amicable settlement. On July 24, 1998, Cornelius John Pasichny took over the office of bishop in Toronto. Former Bishop Isidore Borecky stayed in Toronto until his death on July 23, 2003, and Roman Danylak became a canon in the Papal Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore .
