Demetrius Martin Greschuk

Demetrius Martin Greschuk (born November 7, 1923 in Innisfree , Alberta , Canada , † July 8, 1990 in Edmonton ) was a Canadian clergyman and bishop of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church of Edmonton in Canada.

Life

Greschuk completed his elementary school years near Innisfree. He continued his education in Edmonton High School and graduated from St. Joseph College in Yorkton . From 1943 to 1950 he studied philosophy and theology at the St. Augustin Seminary . He was ordained a priest on June 11, 1950 by Bishop Neil Nicholas Savaryn at Saint Josaphat Cathedral in Edmonton . After ordination , he became secretary to Bishop Savaryn and served in several parishes in Edmonton. In 1968 he was appointed pastor of St. Stephen's Congregation in Calgary and remained there until 1974. On June 27, 1974, he was appointed titular bishop of Nazianzus and auxiliary bishop in Edmonton. In that capacity, he was also the Apostolic Administrator of Edmonton from March 17, 1984 . Bishop Savaryn celebrated his episcopal ordination, assisted by Bishops Andrew Roborecki of Saskatoon and Isidore Borecky of Toronto . On April 28, 1986, Pope John Paul II appointed him Bishop of Edmonton.

He ordained his future successor David Motiuk as a priest and was co- consecrator of his direct successor Myron Michael Daciuk OSBM as titular bishop of Thyatira , after he had been appointed auxiliary bishop in Winnipeg .

Greschuk died in Edmonton at the age of 66. A school was named after him in his honor.
