David Motiuk (born January 13, 1962 in Vegreville , Alberta , Canada ) is the incumbent Ukrainian Greek Catholic Bishop of Edmonton in Canada.

Life

From 1980 David Motiok completed a degree in computer science at the University of Alberta . From 1984 to 1989 he studied at the Saint Paul University in Ottawa , he obtained the degrees in engineering ( Bachelor ) and Canon Law ( Master ) and received the licentiate of canon law .

He was ordained a priest in Edmonton on August 21, 1988 by Bishop Demetrius Martin Greschuk and served in several parishes from 1989 to 1993 . In 1994 he was appointed chaplain to St. Josaphat Cathedral in Edmonton and held this office until 1996. During the same period he served in the Episcopal Ordinariate of the Edmonton Eparchy as a legal advisor , treasurer and a consultant at the Edmonton College. In 1996 he received his doctorate in Canon Law from the Pontifical Oriental Institute in Rome . His dissertation was: “The Particular Law of the Ukrainian Catholic Church in Canada”. From 1996 to 2001 he was in Ottawa, he taught at Holy Spirit Ukrainian Catholic Seminary and also taught at the theological faculty of Saint Paul University and the Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytsky Institute in Ottawa. Between 1997 and 2002 he was called to the Canadian Bishops' Conference as a consultant to the Commission on Canon Law and International Rites . Since 2002 he has also been a consultant in the Theology Commission.

On April 5, 2002 he was appointed auxiliary bishop in Winnipeg and titular bishop of Mathara in Numidia . In Winnipeg he was also Vicar General of the Archeparchy. The Major Archbishop Cardinal Lubomyr Husar and the co-consecrators Archbishop Michael Bzdel CSsR of Winnipeg and Bishop Lawrence Daniel Huculak OSBM of Edmonton donated to him on June 11, 2002, the episcopal ordination .

Pope Benedict XVI appointed him Bishop of Edmonton on March 25, 2007. Since January 15, 2020, David Motiuk has also been Apostolic Administrator of the New Westminster Eparchy .

Bishop Davis Motiuk is recognized as an exceptional expert in canon law for the Eastern Churches . He is a member of the following societies: Society for the Law of the Eastern Churches ( Vienna ), Canadian Canon Law Society, Canon Law Society of America and Canon Law Society of Great Britain and Ireland.
