The Edmonton Eparchy was founded on January 19, 1948 by Pope Pius XII. Established with the Apostolic Constitution Omnium cuiusvis ritus from cession of territory by the Apostolic Exarchate Canada as the Apostolic Exarchate Western Canada . The Apostolic Exarchate of Western Canada was renamed the Apostolic Exarchate of Edmonton on March 10, 1951 .

On November 3, 1956, the Apostolic Exarchate Edmonton was by Pius XII. with the Apostolic Constitution Hanc Apostolicam raised to the eparchy and subordinated to the Archeparch Winnipeg as a suffragan diocese.
