Neil Nicholas Savaryn
Neil Nicholas Savaryn OSBM ( Ukrainian : Ніль Николай Саварин, born May 19, 1905 in Staryj Sambir , Ukraine , formerly Galicia ; † January 8, 1986 in Edmonton , Canada ) was bishop of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church and of Edmonton .
Life
Neil Nicholas Savaryn was appointed religious priest of the Basilians of St. Consecrated to Jehoshaphat . After his ordination he was sent to Canada in 1932 and became abbot of the Basilian monastery in Mundare ( Alberta , Canada). On April 3, 1943, he was called auxiliary bishop in the Apostolic Exarchate of Canada and was appointed titular bishop of Ios . The episcopal ordination on July 1, 1943 was headed by the Apostolic Exarch of Canada, Bishop Basile Vladimir Ladyka OSBM, he was supported by co-consecrators Archbishop James Charles McGuigan and Bishop Ambrozij Andrew Senyshyn OSBM.
On January 19, 1948, he took over the leadership of the new Apostolic Exarchate of Western Canada, based in Edmonton . With effect from November 3, 1956, he was appointed first bishop of the newly formed Edmonton Eparchy . Bishop Savaryn had been a member of the Shevchenko Scientific Society of Canada since 1954 . He was a council father and took part in the four sessions of the Second Vatican Council (1962–1965). He died on January 8, 1986 and was buried in St. Michaels Cemetery in Edmonton.
