Basil Filevich

Basil Filevich , also Wasyl Felivich (born January 13, 1918 in Stryj , Ukraine , † April 20, 2006 in Saskatoon , Canada ) was Bishop of Saskatoon for the Greek Catholic Church of Ukrainians in Canada.

Life

Basil Filevich was one of the nine children of Omelian and Anna Filevich. He completed his priestly training at St. Joseph's Seminary in Edmonton. He was ordained a priest on April 17, 1942 by Archbishop Basil Ladyka OSBM (Archeparchy Winnipeg) . After his ordination, he gained his first experience as a pastor in Dauphin from 1942 to 1943 , followed by duties in Kitchener and St. Catharines until 1951 . In 1951 he was appointed administrative director of the Toronto Eparchy and was church rector of St. Josephat Cathedral in Toronto until 1978 . In 1959 Pope John XXIII appointed him . as prelate , in 1962 he was appointed vicar general of the Toronto Eparchy. 1969–1972 he was pastor of the St. Joseph Congregation in East Oakville . In 1972, Grand Archbishop Cardinal Jossyf Slipyj raised him to the rank of archpriest . From 1978 to 1983 he was a pastor in Thunder Bay . On December 5, 1983, he was appointed by Pope John Paul II to succeed Andrew Roborecki as Bishop of Saskatoon. The episcopal ordination took place the Archbishop of Winnipeg Maxim Hermaniuk CSsR and the co-consecrators Bishop Isidore Borecky (Toronto) and Bishop Neil Nicholas Savaryn OSBM ( Edmonton ) on 27 February 1984. Following his age-related resignation on November 6, 1995, he was until his death on April 20, 2006 Former Bishop of Saskatoon.

Ordinations and Consecrations

Bishop Filevich ordained the future bishops Bryan Joseph Bayda CSsR and Kenneth Nowakowski as priests. As co-consecrator he assisted the bishops Roman Danylak ( titular bishop of Nyssa and apostolic administrator of Toronto) and his successor in the ministry Cornelius John Pasichny OSBM.
