Cornelius John Pasichny

Cornelius John Pasichny OSBM (born March 27, 1927 in Winnipeg , † January 30, 2014 in Toronto ) was a Canadian clergyman and Ukrainian-Greek Catholic bishop of Toronto .

Life

Cornelius John Pasichny joined the religious order of the Basilians and studied philosophy in Glen Cove, Long Island and theology at the Gregoriana in Rome. He made his profession on October 31, 1948 and was ordained a priest on July 5, 1953 by Archbishop Ivam Buchko in Saint Sergios and Bakchos on the Piazza Madonna dei Monti in Rome . After his ordination he completed another philosophical degree at the Gregoriana. In 1954 he returned to Canada and in 1956 completed a master's degree in philosophy at St. Paul University, Ottawa. He then taught scholasticism at the study house of his order in Mundare. He was also a priest in Cracow and Borschtschiw. In 1958/59 he was interim pastor of the Ukrainian-Greek Catholic parish of St. John the Baptist in Ottawa. From 1959 to 1963 he was assistant to the superior ("vicarius") in the Mundare monastery, where he also taught Latin, Slavic church history and Ukrainian history. In 1981 he became the spiritual director of the newly founded Holy Spirit Seminary. In 1985 he became a pastor in his hometown of Winnipeg.

On November 6, 1995 he was elected Bishop of Saskatoon by the Holy Synod and Pope John Paul II confirmed this election. The Archbishop of Winnipeg , Michael Bzdel CSsR , donated him episcopal ordination on January 17th the next year ; Co- consecrators were Basil Filevich , Bishop Emeritus of Saskatoon, and Severian Stefan Yakymyshyn OSBM, Bishop of New Westminster .

On July 1, 1998, he was named Bishop of Toronto. On May 3, 2003, John Paul II accepted his age-related resignation.
