Stephen Victor Chmilar OSBM , DD (born May 24, 1945 in Lamont , Alberta , Canada ) is a Canadian clergyman and emeritus Ukrainian Greek Catholic Bishop of Toronto .

Life

Stephen Victor Chmilar entered the Basilian religious order of St. Josaphat and took his religious vows on November 17, 1968 . He studied from 1966 to 1968 at the University of Ottawa and graduated with a Bachelor of Philosophy degree . From 1968 to 1972 a postgraduate course followed at St. Paul University in Ottawa, which he finished with a Bachelor of Theology .

On June 11, 1972, Bishop Neil Nicholas Savaryn OSBM of Edmonton consecrated him as a religious priest . In 1991 he was incardinated as a minister in the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church and the Diocese of Toronto . He then worked as a pastor and chaplain in the Canadian towns of Chipman , Edmonton , Ottawa and Vancouver , in the US cities of Denver and Buffalo and finally from 2000 again in the Canadian city of Mississauga . In addition, he was the novice master of his religious community in Mundare for five years .

Stephen Victor Chmilar was appointed by Pope John Paul II on May 3, 2003 to succeed Cornelius John Pasichny as Bishop of Toronto. On 23 July 2003 he donated Major Archbishop Lubomyr Cardinal Husar of Lviv , the episcopal ordination . Co -consecrators were Archbishop Michael Bzdel CSsR von Winnipeg and his predecessor Cornelius John Pasichny.

Pope Francis accepted his early resignation on November 9, 2019.
