The archeparchy Philadelphia ( lat. : Archieparchia Philadelphiensis Ucrainorum ) is in the United States located archeparchy the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church , headquartered in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania .

history

Cathedral Immaculate Conception in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

With the immigration of a large number of believers of the Ruthean Greek Catholic Church from the territory of Austro-Hungarian Galicia to the United States of America , beginning at the end of 1870, the establishment of parishes that observed the Byzantine rite began . In Shenandoah, Pennsylvania , a Ukrainian priest erected the first church building in 1884.

The later following parishes and the structure of the Eastern Churches were by Pope Leo XIII. , with the Apostolic Letter " Orientalium dignitas " of 1895, regulated. The jurisdiction was assigned to the respective Roman Catholic diocesan bishops . In 1907 Soter Stephen Ortynsky de Labetz was appointed first full professor for Christians of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church living in the United States of America. The jurisdiction remained with the Roman Catholic bishops. This assignment was changed in 1913 and Bishop Ortynsky was placed under the supervision of the Apostolic Delegate in Washington, DC .

After the death of Bishop Ortynsky (March 24, 1916), the Holy See did not appoint an independent bishop, but the Apostolic Delegate appointed two priests as temporary administrators . The work areas of the administrators were divided, on the one hand for migrants from Lemberg - Halytsch (today Ukraine ) and on the other hand for migrants from Hungary and Croatia . This division of territory and personnel had the advantage that the respective immigrant groups could better associate themselves with their religious communities from the countries of origin.

On May 20, 1924 , Bishop Constantine Bohacewskyi was installed as the first bishop for the United States' Apostolic Exarchate for the people from today's Ukraine, who mainly belonged to the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church . On July 10, 1958, the United States Apostolic Exarchate was established by Pope Pius XII. raised to the Archeparchy and renamed the Archeparchy Philadelphia. Pope John XXIII on July 14, 1961, separated the western part of the Archeparch and appointed the Eparchy Saint Nicolas of Chicago . On December 5, 1983, on the order of Pope John Paul II , the Philadelphia Archepark gave up parts of its territory to establish the Saint Josaphat Eparchy in Parma . The Archbishop of Philadelphia is the metropolitan of the Ukrainian eparchies; the suffragan bishoprics are the eparchies of Saint Josaphat in Parma, Saint Nicolas of Chicago and Stamford.
