Soter Stephen Ortynsky de Labetz OSBM (born January 29, 1866 in Ortynytschi , today 's Lviv Oblast , Ukraine , † March 24, 1916 in Philadelphia , USA ) was the Ukrainian Greek Catholic bishop of the later Archeparchy of Philadelphia .

Life

Born in today's Ukraine in 1866, Ortynsky de Labetz took his religious vows with the Basilians on July 18, 1891, at the age of 25, and thus became a monk . Soter Stephen Ortynsky de Labetz was also ordained a priest in the order of the Basilians .

For those in the US immigrant Uniate Ukrainians Ortynsky de Labetz was, on 28 February 1907 44 years for Bishop today archeparchy Philadelphia appointed. The appointment as titular bishop of Daulia also followed on February 28, 1907.

The solemn episcopal ordination took place on May 12, 1907 by the Archbishop of Lemberg Andrej Scheptyzkyj . Soter Stephen Ortynsky de Labetz died in Philadelphia at the age of 50 on March 24, 1916 . Soter Stephen Ortynsky de Labetz was the first appointed and ordained Greek Catholic bishop in United States church history. He was succeeded in 1924 by Bishop Constantine Bohacewskyi as Apostolic Exarch of the United States.
