NGC 517 is a lenticular galaxy of the Hubble type S0 in the constellation Pisces on the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 194 million light years from the Milky Way and about 80,000 light years in diameter. Together with five other galaxies, it forms the NGC 499 group ( LGG 24 ).
In the same area of ​​the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 510 , NGC 515 , IC 1691 , IC 1692 .

The object was discovered on September 13, 1784 by the German-British astronomer Wilhelm Herschel .
