NGC 499 = IC 1686 is an elliptical galaxy of the Hubble type E / S0 in the constellation Pisces on the ecliptic . It is an estimated 203 million light years away from the Milky Way and is about 100,000 light years in diameter. Together with five other galaxies, it forms the NGC 499 group ( LGG 24 ).
In the same area of the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 495 , NGC 496 , NGC 498 , NGC 501 .
The object was discovered on September 12, 1784 by the German-British astronomer William Herschel .
