IC 1681 is a faint spiral galaxy of the Hubble type S in the constellation Whale south of the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 173 million light years from the Milky Way and about 50,000 light years in diameter.
The galaxies NGC 493 , NGC 497 , IC 1697 are located in the same area of the sky .
The object was discovered by Stéphane Javelle on December 18, 1897 .
