NGC 493 is a barred spiral galaxy of the Hubble type SBc in the constellation Whale south of the ecliptic . It is an estimated 107 million light years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of around 105,000 ly.
In the same area of the sky are the galaxies NGC 521 , IC 1681 , IC 1694 , IC 1697 .
The supernovae SN 1971S (Type-IIP) and SN 2016hgm (Type-IIP) were observed here.
The object was discovered on December 20, 1786 by the German-British astronomer Wilhelm Herschel .
