NGC 492 is a bar-spiral galaxy of the Hubble-type SB? in the constellation Pisces on the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 639 million light years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of around 130,000 ly.
In the same area of the sky are the galaxies NGC 486 , NGC 488 , NGC 490 , NGC 500 , among others .
The object was discovered on December 6, 1850 by the Irish astronomer Bindon Blood Stoney, an assistant to William Parsons .
