NGC 481 is an elliptical galaxy of Hubble type E / S0 in the constellation Cetus south of the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 249 million light years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of around 85,000 ly.
In the same area of the sky is the galaxy NGC 480 .
The object was discovered on November 20, 1886 by the American astronomer Lewis A. Swift .
