Hanna Schwarz , actually Irene Johanna Schwarz , (born August 15, 1943 in Hamburg ) is a German opera singer with the mezzo-soprano and alto voices .

Life

Hanna Schwarz first studied psychology and singing in Hamburg. She completed further vocal studies at the Folkwang University in Essen and at the Hanover University of Music . In 1970 she received her first engagement at the State Theater in Hanover . She made her debut in the role of Siegrune in Richard Wagner's Die Walküre . She celebrated her first major opera success in Hanover as Maddalena in Rigoletto by Giuseppe Verdi . In 1972 she appeared in the title role of the opera Carmen at the Eutin Festival . In 1973 Hanna Schwarz became a member of the Hamburg State Opera , where she subsequently performed successfully for over 30 years. Hanna Schwarz and the pianist Sebastian Peschko emerged as a song interpreter .

In 1975 Schwarz sang for the first time at the Bayreuth Festival . From 1975 to 1998 she was a permanent member of the Bayreuth Festival. There she took on both the great mezzo-soprano and alto roles in Richard Wagner's musical dramas , as well as smaller roles: 1978–1980, 1984–1986 and 1995–1998, she sang Fricka in Der Ring des Nibelungen every year , also 1984–1986 and 1995 –1998 Waltraute in Götterdämmerung , 1976–1977 Erda in Der Ring des Nibelungen and 1981–1983 and 1987 the Brangäne in Tristan and Isolde . In addition, she appeared in Bayreuth as Floßhilde, Roßweße, flower girl and squire in Parsifal and as the 2nd Norn. From 1976 to 1980 she also worked in the so-called Ring of the Century by Patrice Chéreau and Pierre Boulez . The performances were recorded for television in 1980 and later published on CD and DVD.

Hanna Schwarz also appeared regularly at the Salzburg Festival . In 1979 she sang the alto solo in the Ninth Symphony by Ludwig van Beethoven in a performance with the Vienna Philharmonic under the direction of Leonard Bernstein and with Gwyneth Jones , René Kollo and Kurt Moll in the other solo roles. In 1980 she took on the role of Juana in a concert performance of the opera Karl V by Ernst Křenek . This was followed in 1992/1993 by Richard Strauss's Herodias in Salome . In 1999 she sang the role of Countess Geschwitz in Lulu by Alban Berg . In 2003 she appeared in Salzburg as Malik in the world premiere of the opera L'Upupa - the triumph of the love of a son by Hans Werner Henze .

Schwarz has also made guest appearances at the Vienna State Opera since 1976 . There she sang Cherubino in Le nozze di Figaro by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart , Octavian in Der Rosenkavalier by Richard Strauss and from 1999 to 2004 the Klytämnestra in Elektra , also by Richard Strauss. In 1979 she sang the roles of high school student and groom in Paris in the world premiere of the three-act version of Alban Berg's Lulu, supplemented by Friedrich Cerha . In 1977, Schwarz made a successful US debut at the San Francisco Opera as Fricka in Der Ring des Nibelungen . From then on, she appeared at almost all of the world's major opera houses.

She has performed at the Monte Carlo Opera House (1982 as composer), the Geneva Opera House (1985 as Brangäne) and the Covent Garden Opera in London (1990 as Waltraute). In 1995 she sang Klytämnestra at the Cologne Opera and in December 1995 at the Nuremberg Opera House under the musical direction of Eberhard Kloke . In 1996 she sang the wet nurse in The Woman Without Shadow by Richard Strauss at the Dresden State Opera .

In the 1996/1997 season, Schwarz was heard for the first time at the Metropolitan Opera in New York . There she appeared as Fricka, Waltraute and Herodias. In 1999 the Klytämnestra followed and in 2000 again the Fricka. In 2001, Schwarz sang Grafin Geschwitz in Alban Berg's Lulu at the Metropolitan Opera .

For her embodiment of the role of Klytämnestra she was voted singer of the year by Opernwelt magazine in 1997.

In 1999 she sang Herodias with great success in a production by Willy Decker at the Hamburg State Opera. In 2003 she sang Countess Geschwitz again, this time at the Bonn Opera in a production by Werner Schroeter . In 2005 she took on the role of the old, mysterious countess in a new production of the opera Queen of Spades by Peter Tchaikovsky at the San Francisco Opera. At the Ruhrtriennale in 2006 she sang Wesener's old mother in Bochum in the opera The Soldiers by Bernd Alois Zimmermann . In May 2008 she sang the old slave Beroe in the opera Die Bassariden by Hans Werner Henze at the Bavarian State Opera in Munich . In December 2008 she took on the small but dramaturgically important role of wet nurse in Boris Godunow by Modest Mussorgsky at the Dresden State Opera , for which she received very positive reviews. In 2009 she sang Herodias again at the Deutsche Oper in Berlin . In June 2010 she sang the role of Herodias at the Festival del Mediterrani in Valencia, alongside Siegfried Jerusalem . In March 2011 she sang Herodias in the Berlin Philharmonic under Sir Simon Rattle .

In November 2017 she returned to the Frankfurt Opera , where she had sung in the 1970s. Ms. Bach performed it in the world premiere of the opera Der Mieter based on Roland Topor's novel, set to music by Arnulf Herrmann , staged by Johannes Erath , conducted by Kazushi Ōno .

Hanna Schwarz is a professor at the Hamburg University of Music and Theater in the field of singing , oratorio and lied .
