Siegfried Jerusalem
Siegfried Jerusalem (born April 17, 1940 in Oberhausen ; at times also under the stage name Siegfried Salem ) is a German opera singer ( tenor ).
Life
Siegfried Jerusalem, the son of an electrical engineer, attended the Folkwang School in Essen from 1955 to 1960 , majoring in bassoon and piano and a minor in violin. In 1961 he was appointed first bassoonist with the Hof Symphony Orchestra and in 1962 with the Württemberg Philharmonic in Reutlingen . 1971–1977 he played the second bassoonist in the Südfunk-Sinfonieorchester Stuttgart .
Parallel to these engagements, Jerusalem had his tenor voice trained by Hertha Kalcher from 1961. In a ZDF production of the Gypsy Baron in 1975, he switched from the orchestra to the stage for the first time when he took over the role of Barinkay for the prevented Franco Bonisolli . After a few small roles in Stuttgart , he made his debut as Lohengrin in Darmstadt and Aachen in 1976 and sang at the Bayreuth Richard Wagner Festival in 1977 . His late but rapid career took Jerusalem to all the major opera houses in the world, making a name for himself primarily as a Wagner tenor.
In Bayreuth he presented himself in all the great hero games in his field, with the exception of Tannhauser . For many years he formed the so-called “Bayreuth dream couple” with Waltraud Meier , with whom he a. a. im Parsifal (1987–1988, director: Götz Friedrich , conductor: Daniel Barenboim and James Levine ), im Siegfried (1988–1992), in der Götterdämmerung (1989–1992, director: Harry Kupfer , conductor: Daniel Barenboim) and in Tristan and Isolde (1993–1999, director: Heiner Müller , conductor: Daniel Barenboim).
In 1993 Jerusalem was awarded the title of Austrian Chamber Singer . In 1996 he got a Bambi . He is also devoted to contemporary music and song singing . Until 2009 he was President of the Nuremberg University of Music . Siegfried Jerusalem lives in Nuremberg today .
Again and again he can be seen in character roles on stage, u. a. as Aegisth in the opera Elektra and as Herodes in the opera Salome , so in April and May 2008 at the Hamburg State Opera under the direction of Simone Young . In October 2015 he appeared as Balthasar Zorn in Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg at the Staatsoper Berlin under the direction of Daniel Barenboim, also again in April 2019.
