Kazushi Ōno ( Japanese大野 和 士, Ōno Kazushi , born 1960 in Tokyo ) is a Japanese conductor.

life and work

Ono studied at the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music and was a student of Leonard Bernstein in Tanglewood and of Wolfgang Sawallisch and Giuseppe Patanè at the Bavarian State Opera in Munich. In 1987 he won first prize in the international Arturo Toscanini competition for conductors.

From 1990 to 1996 he was chief conductor of the Zagreb Philharmonic , then until 2002 general music director of the Badische Staatskapelle Karlsruhe , where he performed the complete Ring des Nibelungen by Wagner . He was also principal conductor of the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra from 1992 to 2000 . In 2002 he succeeded Antonio Pappano as musical director of the Royal Belgian Opera House La Monnaie . Here he led u. a. Strauss ' Elektra , Mozart's Don Giovanni , Britten's Peter Grimes , Wagner's Tannhauser , Verdi's Aida and Strauss' Die Frau ohne Schatten . In 2007 he conducted the Venice New Year's Concert . In 2008 Ono moved to the Opéra National de Lyon as Artistic Director , a position he held until 2017. He also made guest appearances a. at the Metropolitan Opera , the Vienna State Opera and the La Scala in Milan , a. a. In 2005 he gave three concerts with Gustav Mahler's 7th Symphony .

Since 2015 he has been chief conductor of the Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra and the Orquestra Simfònica de Barcelona i Nacional de Catalunya , and since 2018 he has also been the artistic director of the New National Theater Tokyo .

In addition, he acts u. a. as guest conductor of the London Philharmonic Orchestra , the Boston Symphony Orchestra , the NDR Symphony Orchestra , the Gewandhaus Orchestra , the Munich Philharmonic , the Danish Radio Symphony Orchestra , the BBC Symphony Orchestra , the orchestra of the RAI in Turin , the Ensemble intercontemporain , the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra , the Orchester Philharmonique de Radio France and the Radio Symphonie Orchester Wien .

Ono is particularly interested in composers of the 20th century, and he conducted a. a. Works by Olivier Messiaen , György Ligeti , Wolfgang Rihm , Mauricio Kagel , Salvatore Sciarrino , Sofia Gubaidulina , Alfred Schnittke , Toru Takemitsu , Toshio Hosokawa and John Adams as well as the Japanese premieres of Hans Werner Henze's eighth and ninth symphonies. He also conducted the world premieres of Luca Francesconi's Ballatta , Toshio Hosokawa's Hanjo , Philippe Boesmans ' Julie and - on November 12, 2017 at the Frankfurt Opera - Arnulf Herrmann's Der Mieter , staged by Johannes Erath .
