Zagreb Philharmonic ( Zagrebačka filharmonija , FZS in Croatian) is an orchestra based in Zagreb , Croatia .

history

The orchestra was founded in Zagreb in 1871.

In 1920 it got its current name.

Chief conductors of the orchestra were u. a. Friedrich Zaun , Milan Horvat , Lovro von Matačić , Mladen Bašić , Pavle Dešpalj , Kazushi Ōno , Pavel Kogan , Alexander Rahbari and Vjekoslav Šutej .

Many famous conductors and composers have also worked with the Zagreb Philharmonic: Bruno Walter , Leopold Stokowski , Paul Kletzki , Sir Malcolm Sargent , Kirill Kondraschin , Kurt Sanderling , Carlo Zecchi , Jean Martinon , Milan Sachs , Krešimir Baranović , Boris Papandopulo , Stjepan Šulek , Milko Kelemen , Igor Stravinski , Krzysztof Penderecki and others.

Recent guest conductors have included Dmitri Kitajenko , Lorin Maazel , Leopold Hager , Valery Gergiev , Marko Letonja , Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos , Hans Graf , Sir Neville Marriner , Berislav Klobučar , Jesús López Cobos , Peter Maxwell Davies and others.

The Zagreb Philharmonic gave concerts in almost all European countries, in Russia , the United States , Mexico and Japan . She also regularly participated in the Dubrovnik Summer Festival and the Zagreb Biennale. In 2016 the orchestra made its debut at New York's Carnegie Hall . In 2019 it was nominated for a Grammy in the category "Best Gospel Album" .

David Danzmayr has been the chief conductor of the Zagreb Philharmonic since 2016 .
