Marko Letonja (born August 12, 1961 ) is a Slovenian conductor .

Life

Little is known about his résumé: it wasn't until he was almost 50 years old that the music world became aware of him. According to his own statements, the roots of his enthusiasm for music lie in rock music. He received his first piano lessons at the age of eleven. To the chagrin of his parents, who found it difficult to buy a piano for him, he didn't practice every day - rock music seemed much more natural and correct to him at 13. For classical music he was won over by the music teacher at the school, who let him lead the concert of the school orchestra after two months of conducting lessons (see the interview in 2012 when he took over the chief position in the Tasmania Orchestra in 2012). He began his studies with Anton Nanut at the Music Academy in Ljubljana . The conducting studies with Otmar Suitner at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna were completed in 1989.

From 1991 to 2003 he was musical director of the Slovenian Philharmonic in Ljubljana. From 2003 to 2006 he was chief conductor and music director of the Basel Symphony Orchestra and the Basel Theater . The Basel Symphony Orchestra is currently playing the complete symphonic works of Felix Weingartner under Marko Letonja for CPO . From 2008 to 2011 he was Principal Guest Conductor of the Orchestra Victoria Melbourne.

In 2011 Letonja conducted three performances of the legendary Traviata production by Ruth Berghaus as well as a symphony concert at the State Opera in Stuttgart. In summer 2011 he was appointed music director of the Strasbourg Philharmonic . Then came guest conductors in quick succession at the Scala Les contes d'Hoffmann in Milan , at the Vienna State Opera, in Lisbon (entire Ring), Hamburg, Australia and New Zealand. In 2012 he was appointed Chief Conductor of the Tasmanian Orchestra.

From the 2018/19 season, Marko Letonja will be General Music Director of the Bremen Philharmonic, succeeding Markus Poschner .
