Vjekoslav Šutej

Vjekoslav Šutej (born July 31, 1951 in Rijeka , Yugoslavia ; † December 2, 2009 in Zagreb , Croatia ) was a Yugoslav and Croatian conductor who worked for almost 15 years at the Vienna State Opera .

Life and artistic work

Vjekoslav Šutej grew up in a musical family. His parents were both singers at the Croatian National Opera in Zagreb . He studied with Igor Gjadrov at the Zagreb Music Academy . Further studies took him to Rome to Franco Ferrara .

Šutej was artistic director and chief conductor of the Croatian National Theater in Split from 1979 to 1989 . From 1986 to 1990 he was Artistic Director of the Hollybush Festival in New Jersey . During this time his international career began. From 1990 to 1993 he was musical director at the Teatro La Fenice in Venice , where he directed new productions of the operas Rigoletto and Eugen Onegin (season 1990/91, in Russian ).

From 1992 to 1997 he was music director at the Houston Grand Opera . During this time he directed a total of 133 performances, including 19 new productions, including La Bohème , Andrea Chénier , Aida , Lucia di Lammermoor , La Traviata , Boris Godunow and Ariadne auf Naxos . In the 1996/97 season he conducted the world premiere of the opera Florencia en el Amazonas by the Mexican composer Daniel Catán (1949–2011).

In the 1990s, Šutej worked frequently in Spain . He founded the Royal Symphony Orchestra of Seville and was its artistic director and chief conductor from 1990 to 1996. He was also a member of the Spanish art academy, the Real Accademia de Bellas Artes .

Since 1993, Šutej has conducted regularly at the Vienna State Opera and has been a permanent guest conductor. He made his debut there in 1993 with the new production of the opera Pique Dame by Peter Tschaikowski . In the 2001/2002 season he directed the opening premiere of Don Carlos by Giuseppe Verdi , with Neil Shicoff in the title role, which was broadcast live in the form of public viewing in Vienna and Graz . Most recently, Šutej conducted at the Vienna State Opera in April 2007. According to the Vienna State Opera, he directed a total of 129 performances in 17 different works of opera literature in the Haus am Ring. Among other things, he conducted the operas La Bohème , La Traviata , Madame Butterfly , Die Jüdin and Tosca in Vienna .

From 2002 to 2005 he was the director of the Summer Music Festival in Dubrovnik . From 2003 until his death he was musical director and chief conductor of the Zagreb Philharmonic Orchestra (Zagreb Philharmonic Orchestra) and professor at the University of Music in Zagreb.

Guest appearances have taken Šutej to Moscow and Prague , to Mexico City and to Seattle . In Frankfurt he conducted the New Year's Concert in the Frankfurt Opera in 1991 . He conducted at the Monte Carlo Opera and in the Arena di Verona . He has directed the concert event Christmas in Vienna several times in Vienna . He often worked at concerts with the tenors José Carreras , Plácido Domingo and Ramon Vargas .

Vjekoslav Šutej died after a long and serious illness of complications from cancer . He was diagnosed with leukemia in 2008 . Several bone marrow transplants in Seattle and Zagreb were unsuccessful.
