Ramón Vargas (born September 11, 1960 in Mexico City ) is a Mexican opera singer ( tenor ).

Life

Vargas has appeared as an opera singer in many major theaters: at the State Operas in Munich and Vienna , Covent Garden in London, at Scala in Milan, at the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires, at the New York Met , Lyric Opera Chicago, Grand Opera Houston and Opera Los Angeles. He is best known for his interpretation of roles from Verdi , Puccini , Massenet , Gounod , Tchaikovsky , Stravinsky , Rossini , Bellini and Donizetti .

Stations in his musical life were: the boys' choir of the Basilica of Guadalupe , the Cardenal Miranda Institute (teacher training), first prize in 1982 in the national Carlo Morelli competition, and then his debut at the Mexico City Opera House with Verdi's Falstaff . In 1986 he won the Caruso competition in Milan. This was followed by the opera studio of the Vienna State Opera, Lucerne, Zurich, Marseille, the Vienna State Opera and the Opéra de Bastille in Paris. In 1992 he made his debut at the New York Metropolitan Opera, where he stepped in for the sick Luciano Pavarotti in the role of Edgardo in Donizetti's Lucia di Lammermoor . In 1993 he made his debut at La Scala in Milan as Fenton in Verdi's Falstaff, conducted by Riccardo Muti. At the Salzburg Festival he played the title role in Mozart's Idomeneo . In 2010 he was at the Bavarian State Opera to Giasone in Johann Simon Mayr's Medea in Corinto . In 2013/14 Vargas was cast in Don Carlo (Don Carlo), Un ballo in maschera (Gustaf III.), Manon (Chevalier Des Grieux) and La Bohème (Rodolfo) at the Vienna State Opera .

Vargas lives in Vienna with his wife Amalia and their two sons, Fernando and Rodrigo.
