Philippe Boesmans

Philippe Boesmans (born May 17, 1936 in Tongeren ) is a Belgian composer and organist .

Life

Philippe Boesmans studied piano at the Royal Conservatory of Liège (Conservatoire Royal de Liège). Philippe Boesmans is an autodidact as a composer. His first compositions date from 1960, after contacts with Pierre Froidebise , Henri Pousseur , Célestin Deliège (1922–2010) and André Souris (1899–1970) encouraged him to do so. Since 1985 he has been the resident composer of the Brussels Opera La Monnaie , on whose behalf he composed several operas. He worked closely with the director Luc Bondy (1948–2015), who adapted four operatic themes for him and then staged the world premieres.

His works are regularly featured on the programs of the relevant festivals in Darmstadt, Warsaw, Zagreb, Brussels, Royan, Metz and Avignon.

The world premiere of the opera Au monde received the International Opera Award in 2015.
