NGC 489 is a lenticular galaxy of the Hubble type S0 in the constellation Pisces on the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 116 million light years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of around 55,000 ly.
In the same area of the sky are the galaxies NGC 502 , NGC 505 , NGC 509 , NGC 518 .
The object was discovered on December 22, 1862 by the German-Danish astronomer Heinrich Ludwig d'Arrest .
