NGC 478 is a spiral galaxy of Hubble type in the constellation Cetus south of the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 302 million light years from the Milky Way and about 80,000 light years in diameter.
The object was discovered in 1886 by the American astronomer Francis Preserved Leavenworth .
