NGC 491 is a bar-spiral galaxy of the Hubble type SBb in the constellation Sculptor in the southern sky . It is an estimated 171 million light years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of about 70,000 ly.
Nearby is another galaxy, for which the designation NGC 491A was given.
The object was discovered on September 25, 1834 by the British astronomer John Herschel .
