NGC 509 is a lenticular galaxy of the Hubble type SB0 / a in the constellation Pisces on the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 105 million light years from the Milky Way and about 50,000 light years across.
In the same area of the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 505 , NGC 516 , NGC 518 , NGC 524 .
The type Ibc supernova PSN J01232438 + 0925545 was observed here.
The object was discovered on October 1, 1864 by the German astronomer Albert Marth .
