NGC 531 is a lenticular galaxy in the constellation Andromeda , which is about 215 million light years from the Milky Way . NGC 531 together with the galaxies NGC 529 , NGC 536 and NGC 542 form the Hickson Compact Group 10, abbreviated as HCG 10.
Johan Ludvig Emil Dreyer noted William Parsons as the discoverer . The observation was carried out on October 16, 1855, however, by his then assistant RJ Mitchell .
