NGC 549 is a spiral galaxy of Hubble type Sa in the constellation Sculptor at the southern sky . It is estimated to be 269 million light years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of around 40,000 ly.
In the same area of the sky are the galaxies NGC 534 , NGC 544 , NGC 546 , among others .
The object was discovered on November 29, 1837 by the British astronomer John Herschel .
